Train Trip from Shanghai to Lhasa
Distance between Shanghai in the east of China and Lhasa in the southwest corner is over 4,000km. Train travel to Lhasa became reality when the Qinghai-Tibet railway opened in 2007. There are several pair of trains linked Lhasa and some major cities including Shanghai. Train Z164 is the only direct train operated daily from Shanghai to Lhasa. It is popular though the journey takes over 47 hours, and even the hard seats are always sold out quickly.
Fortunately, there are alternative plans for those who have limited time. Many visitors would travel the way west to Lanzhou by train or flight, then board the Tibet train ascending the plateau to Lhasa. We list below the train options from Shanghai to Lanzhou.
