Fenghuang is an ancient town in western boundary of Hunan province, central China. The town is well-preserved and enjoys the same reputation as Pingyao in Shanxi and Lijiang in Yunnan. New Zealand writer Louis Ale described it as “most beautiful city in China”. Home to Tujia and Miao ethnic people, Fenghuang shares many of their characteristics and culture. Their traditional wooden houses line along the Tuojiang river that flows through most of the village. On both sides of the banks, there are also many side alleys full of shops, restaurants, boutique hotels and former celebrity homes. The old quarter were all circled by protective walls built up at the same time in Ming dynasties some 500 years ago. Parts of the wall are preserved and become iconic points to take photo. The town is even more beautiful in early morning mist or evening light. The only disadvantage is that the town is quite isolated from big cities. So tours to Fenghuang is always combined with visit of Zhangjiajie, Changsha, Guiyang or Guilin. Request a tailor make tour if none of the sample itineraries is suitable for you. Fenghuang is the "most beautiful city in China" described by New Zealand writer Louis Ale and the "Painting Village" by painter Huang Yongyu. It is comparable to the ancient city of Lijiang in Yunnan and the ancient city of Pingyao in Shanxi. It is an ideal town to relax, paint and photograph.
