Main attractions in Dazu

The Dazu Rock Carvings are the main attractions in Dazu County. The scenic area consists of five parts: Baodingshan Grottoes, Beishan Grottoes, Nanshan Grottoes, Shimen Mountain Grottoes, and Shizhuanshan Grottoes. Currently, only Baodingshan and Beishan are accessible to the public.

Located 15 kilometers northeast of Longgang Street in Dazu District, Baodingshan showcases cliff carvings that originated during the Southern Song Dynasty. The surrounding rocky mountains within a 2.5-kilometer radius are adorned with Buddha statues. The main site is Dafowan, centered around Shengshou Temple, accompanied by Xiaofowan. These remarkable sculptures depict the Six Realms of Reincarnation, magnificent pagodas, the Three Saints of Huayan, and the Thousand-Armed Guanyin, leaving a lasting impression.

The Beishan cliff carvings, a part of the Dazu Rock Carvings, were created from the late Tang Dynasty to the Southern Song Dynasty. Situated on Beishan, 2 kilometers north of Dazu District, these carvings span over 500 meters and showcase detailed sculptures reaching a height of around 7 meters. With more than 5,000 statues, they display exceptional craftsmanship. Although certain areas have experienced damage, the majority of the carvings remain in excellent condition.

Changzhou Ancient Town in Chongqing's Dazu District is known as the "Fragrant Land of Crabapple Blossoms." Though mostly built later, it recreates the prosperous Northern Song Dynasty era. This tourist destination along the river features attractions like Changzhou Prefecture Office, National Study Hall, a grand stage, elegant pavilions, and a 13-meter-high city wall. It resembles the painting "Along the River During the Qingming Festival." The town's streets and alleys vary in width and height, creating a lively atmosphere. The ancient city walls, adorned with murals of the Cowherd and Weaver Girl, capture the essence of the past.
