Arrive in Xian (Flight not included)

Arrive in Xian, be met and transferred to hotel in downtown city. Afternoon activity includes a visit to Muslim Street – a Muslim quarter lies 100 meters west of the Bell Tower, and Big Wild Goose Pagoda which is a major Buddhist site in the area.

Xian, formerly named Chang'an, is one of the oldest cities in China with a history over 3100 years. Former glory had been capital city of 10 dynasties in history and its prosperity making it the starting point of the ancient Silk Road. It is now a must see destinations for visitors. The city is convenient connected to all major cities and even Lhasa, Dunhuang, Lijiang those offer rare flight journey.

Xian to Tianshui (Train transfer)

Take a 3.5 hours train from Xian to Tianshui, a large city only second to Lanzhou in Gansu Province. It once was one of the key points along ancient Silk Road. Afternoon activity includes a visit to Yuquan Taoist Temple in the north of Tianshui city. It is one of the best-known Taoist temples in China.

Tianshui to Lanzhou

Morning visit starts from one of the four famous grottoes – Maijishan Grottoes. Then forward to Lanzhou in the afternoon. Drive journey takes about 4 hours covering a distance of 340km. Enjoy a leisure walk to the Yellow River Iron Bridge in the city center on your own.

Maijishan Grottoes is one of China's four Buddhist cave complexes, but less well known than the other three. There are 7000 clay sculptures and carved stone statues which are vividely carved from 16cm to 16 meters in height. Many of them has a history over 1000 years. Visitors can get access to the fine art connected by plank roads.

Lanzhou to Xiahe

Drive from Lanzhou to Xiahe via a way to the impressive Buddhist grottoes of Binglingsi.

The Bingling Temple is a number of impressive Buddhist carvings made into natural caves on the cliffside along the Yellow River. All 183 caves, 694 stone statues, and 82 clay sculptures that remain are locked away by Liujiaxia Reservor. It is only accessable in Summer and Fall by boat.

Xiahe Xiling Hotel



Xiahe is rural town 240km away from Lanzhou city, south of Gansu province. Major inhabitants are ethnic Tibetans, as well as some Hui and Han people. The famous Labrang Monastery and pasture view at Songke Grassland is a big draw for visitors.

Founded in 1709, Labrang Monastery is the most important monastery outside of Tibet. Located in Xiahe, Gansu Province, Labrang monastery contains 18 halls , six institutes, a golden stupa and a sutra debate area. All the buildings are colorful and well decorated both inside and outside. It is without doubt a remarkable place to visit in west China. Visitors may come across ceremonies and activities like Buddha-unfolding, sutra enchanting, praying and sutra debates in January and June.

Xiahe Xiling Hotel


Xiahe to Tongren

Tongren is the homeland of Regong arts which has great influence in Tibetan world. The town sits on the edge of Tibetan plateau in Qinghai Province. It is about 3-hour drive journey from Xiahe to Tong ren. On arrival, visit Longwu Monastery and Wutun Monastery.

Longwu (Rongwo) Monastery, is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery built in 1301 AD. It is the largest Glukpa temple in Qinghai province and only second to Potala Palace in Tibet and Labrang Monastery in Gansu province. It is without doubt a nice place to experience Tibetan culture and arts out of Tibet.

Wutun Monastery is located 7km north of Tongren, Qinghai province. The complex is divided into the "lower" and "upper" monastery. Each is elaborately decorated with bright painted wood carvings. Wutun Monastery is widely known in Tibetan world, particularly its large collection of century old Thanka paintings. Over 90 monks live in the monastery and 22 of them are artists continuing the Thangka tradition.

Zhangye to Jiayuguan

Drive to Zhangye city and take visit to Giant Buddha Temple and Wooden Tower which was originally built in the Sui Dynasty and restored in 1926. Stay overnight in Jiayuguan.

Giant Buddha Temple is located 66km east of the ancient city of Zhangye, Gansu Province. The temple was built in 1098 and remains un-restored. It is notable for the reclining Buddha which is the largest in China.

Jiayuguan to Dunhuang

Jiayuguan once was a strategic points guarding the western boundary of Ming Dynasty China. Morning visit include the famous Jiayuguan Pass and Suspended Great Wall. Continue a drive journey to Dunhuang afterwards.

Jiayuguan (or Jiayu Pass) is the west end of the Great Wall of China. It stands significantly between two hills, 6 km west of Jiayuguan city and once was a key point of Silk Road. The city wall remains 733 meters long and 11 meters tall making it a remarkable spots in Gansu Province.

The Suspended Great Wall is part of the Great Wall of China, located 11 km northwest of Jiayuguan city and 7 km north of Jiayu Pass. It once was the first frontier in west of China. The wall is mostly constructed of mud and not very tall or thick, going up the mountain at a 45 degree angle. Though only 750 meters of the wall survived over centuries, it offers impressive view to all visitors.

Dunhuang was a major stop of the ancient Silk Road. It is widely known to the world for the famous Dunhuang Caves in the area. A day sightseeing to the essence of Dunhuang. Highlights include the Mogao Grottoes and the Singing Sand Mountains and Crescent Spring in adjacent.

Mogao Grottoes or Mogao Caves are a set of temples carved into cliffs 25 km southeast of Dunhuang city. The caves contain the largest and the richest Buddhist art in the world reflecting the political and social situations from 4th to the 14th century in Chinese history. Reaching this important site along the Silk Road, visitors are allowed to view 10 of them according to the temperate allocation.
