Datong, a city in northern China, was a capital city in the 4th century. For long history, it was an important bordering city between central China and northern nomads. The city has some earliest splendors of Chinese civilization. Renovation made in the past few years has turned the city’s walled quarter to a fascinating and charming place. Outside of the city, there are Buddhist treasure – Yungang Grottoes, photogenic Hangying Monastery, world’s oldest wooden pagoda, earthen sections of Great Wall. Datong is also the gateway to the temple clusters at Wutai Mountain, Pingyao and onward to Xian. With the opening of bullet train route from Beijing, it is much easier to plan a tour to the hidden gem - Datong.

How much time do you have in Datong?
Two days and one night from Beijing is enough if you just want a visit of the Buddhist treasures at Yungang Grottoes and the walled Datong city.
For four - five days, you could check our Datong and Pingyao, or Datong and Wutaishan tour.
Six to 8 days, you can expect a complete tour including Datong, Wutaishan and Pingyao.
When do you want to travel?
Datong belongs to the northern part of China. Winter is cold but endurable with the heating served from November to April like all other northern cities. Consider the Summer, Autumn if you prefer higher temperature.
Due to the inconvenience of transport, Datong was a famous city but with little experience with foreigners. Hotel options are not many up to now.
