Yonghe Lamasery, also popular as the Lama Temple, historically the covert residence of the emperors Yongzheng and Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. In the ninth year of Qianlong's reign (1744), it was converted into a Tibetan Buddhist temple. In 1981, it was opened to the public as a religious site and is the largest Gelug Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the Beijing area. In 1995, it was officially registered by the Beijing Cultural Relics Bureau as the "Yonghe Temple Tibetan Buddhist Art Museum," combining the functions of a religious site, tourist attraction, and museum.
